Still Existing!

Sorry for the lack of posts. I simply haven't had anything to say. We went out to the hardware store on Monday, which is literally within sight of our house, and I had Braxton Hicks contractions the whole time, making it a miserable experience for me. I haven't dared venture out again since. When you never leave the house, there isn't much to talk about.

Many of you wrote to ask about the train crash on Monday. G was lucky enough to have the day off, but yes, the commuter train that was involved was one he could have potentially been working on. He still hasn't heard if he knew anyone on the trains or not. I cried to see the wreckage, and am so grateful he was not among it. My heart goes out to the families of those killed and injured.

We still have not seen the policeman, who needs to come to the house to check that I live here before I can be issued my permanent identity card. Until I have that permanent card, I cannot get health insurance and we can't get any of the married benefits G is entitled to through work. G went yesterday to city hall to inquire yet again, and learned that the policeman is on holiday. The woman who had assisted us before told him to come back Monday morning and she will try to figure out a way to help us.

We had a rare few hours of sun yesterday. I spent some time sitting at the table in our backyard enjoying the nice weather. One of the two cats we see regularly in the yard made an appearance, and with some cajoling, even came close enough to rub against my legs. It was nice, I miss my cat very much!

  1. I'm sorry you miss your cat! But no worries, Big T and I are planning on getting a few of those flat rate boxes and sending both of our cats to you in one. We bought a new cat litter and they decided that anywhere else in the house except the litter box is fair game now, so we are done with them.
Finally went back to work and class on Tuesday of this week. Rumors of 8-10 inches of snowfall for Sunday are floating around. I hope it's not true, we have no where to put the snow!
Have you met any of your neighbors yet? I'm sure once Luna comes you will. I hear taking a baby out for a walk to the park is great way to meet the ladies. And as she gets older she can be your little walking Dutch-to-English translation dictionary. I'll have to get her a T-shirt that says "Mommy's little interpreter" LOL

  2. Flat rate boxes don't work internationally, which is sad, I had so looked forward to receiving a box of dead cats. :S

I have not met the neighbors yet. I haven't even SEEN a lot of the neighbors yet. For instance, a single woman supposedly lives in the other half of this duplex, but we have never seen or heard her. I see the kids from next door occasionally, but I haven't glimpsed their parents. Maybe there will be more activity once it warms up.

I hope I have learned Dutch before Luna has to act as my interpreter! She'll already be the kid with the weird foreign mom that sends bizarre things like peanut butter and jelly in the lunchbox! I hope to spare her the embarrassment of having a completely unassimilated mama. We decided I can't really take a class until after the baby comes (and only then if we can find one during day hours so G can stay with Luna), but in the meantime I have been working on my vocabulary with this site. It has games to play to build your vocabulary. I am up to the foods so far.

  3. Just played the food and the fruit and vegetables games. They're cute and fun. A lot of the words are cognates, or very similar to french and spanish words.
I'll have to try out more later.

I thought the flat rate boxes were okay because we used them to send my brother packages when he was in Iraq and Bosnia. Maybe they make exceptions for packages to U.S. posts.
